Choosing a martial art is dependent on your individual goals, body type and mindset. For example, you might be interested in weight loss, physical fitness, effective self-defence, competitive sport, strength, confidence, self-development, discipline, or some of the many other benefits.
Furthermore, even within the same system the emphasis can vary from school to school. Usually a martial arts school will emphasise some areas over others. For example, real self-defence and sport fighting are quite different. Although they have overlapping skills (speed, accuracy, power), they have very different distancing, emphasise different primary techniques and have very different pre-fight strategies.
Holistic Karate places emphasis on effective self-defence, personal development (body, mind and spirit) and traditional values (respect, discipline, courtesy etc).
If you train for a fair fight, you’re training for sport. Real violence is seldom fair! Fighting techniques alone are not always enough; you need strategies to de-escalate, gain a position of advantage and to catch the aggressor of guard.
If you want to learn sport fighting, then we are not your best option (but we are honest about it). It can be great fun and good for self development. We do not intend to infer criticism in any way, it’s just not what we do.
